Amidst the idyllic setting of Petaluma, California sits a family-owned farm that plays host to over 5,000 lavender plants. The Lavender Bee Farm is owned by husband and wife, Rick and JoAnn Wallenstein - and has been in JoAnn's family for over 60 years. Four varieties of lavender are grown on the farm - English, Provence (or French), Grosso and Spanish. Each variety is unique in terms of scent, color and how it can best be used. Every summer, the Wallensteins harvest the lavender crops and make sachets, oils, culinary products and arrangements that are either sold at the farm's store or sent to local florists. JoAnn credits the Sonoma County climate, with its coastal breezes, as well as the sloping farmland, for the heartiness of their lavender crops. Lavender grows best in well-drained, or sloped areas, with four hours of full sun per day, and must be watered from the bottom. If properly tended, the hearty lavender plant can bloom for up to twelve years. Special Thanks:
