By the mid 18th century, Newport, Rhode Island was one of the most important ports in colonial America and home to some of the finest craftsmen of the time. It was during that era that John Stevens came down from Boston to set up shop as a stone carver and mason, thus beginning a business that is one of the oldest in the country.
For 300 years, they have worked as stone carvers preserving an artisan craft steeped in tradition. The Stevens family owned and operated the business for six generations and in 1927 John Benson purchased the business which has prospered under the ownership of his son and grandson.
Their work can be found on America's most prominent buildings and monuments, as well as the Headstones of many of the countries most memorable families.
