What's more rewarding than watching hummingbirds darting around a property, enjoying the bounty of the backyard? Flowering shrubs, selected for their nectar-rich blossoms throughout the season, provide hummingbirds with the nutrition they need.

Spring Meadow Nursery in Grand Haven, Michigan has spent 25 years breeding shrubs to enhance the backyard habitat and horticulturalist Tim Wood suggests some of the finest garden-worthy shrubs to provide nectar and protein-rich insects to the hummingbird's diet. Although colorful bloomers are certainly high on a hummingbird's list of favorite fodder, they have been known to go for more than just bright blooms.

Many of these shrubs can be grown in patio containers to bring hummingbirds closer to your back door. Tim's suggestions of container-worthy shrubs that attract hummingbirds are:

Abelia chinensis
Abelia mosanensis
Buddleia davidii ‘Nanho Purple'
Buddleia Lo & Behold ‘Blue Chip'
Clethra ‘Hummingbird'
Hibiscus ‘Blue Chiffon'
Hibiscus ‘Lavender Chiffon'
Hibiscus ‘White Chiffon'
Kolkwitzia ‘Pink Cloud'
Vitex agnus-castus
Weigela ‘Ghost'
Weigela ‘Wine & Roses'
