Insects have long been used as pest control in the garden, and thanks in part to Jessica Walliser, there is a renewed interest in the use of beneficial bugs as a non-toxic approach to keeping insect damage to a minimum. Jessica Walliser has written a book on the use of beneficial bugs called Good Bug, Bad Bug, identifying beneficial bugs as well as some pests. Examples of beneficial bugs include aphidius wasps, assassin bugs, damsel bugs, ground beetles, hover flies, ladybugs, lacewings , praying mantis, robber flies, spiders and nematodes. Introducing them into the garden can be done through releasing larvae or adult bugs. Organic gardening is essential to the health of beneficial bugs. There are many national suppliers of organic products, beneficial insects and nematodes that can be found on the web or through your local extension service.
